Amethyst Engagement Rings
The ring is a symbol of a man's "ownership" of a woman. However, the use of gems may be credited to aristocratic class as they are expensive and the symbol of the rich.
Some argue though this practice is even more ancient ethnic groups where men, who would often go away at lengths to look for food, would require their wife of wives to wear a certain jewelry to signify that they already belong to someone else. These jewelries usually contain a specific symbol that is identified with the man.
I also read that the earliest claim for having an engagement ring is Mary of Burgundy in 1477 by Maximilian of Austria but it was when Princess Mary got an emerald engagement ring did the resurgence of rare stones happen. Lady Diana Spencer bought a ring off the rack in her rush to have one, it was a sapphire ring.
Another popular is the amethyst engagement ring. Amethyst is the birthstone for February and the zodiac stone of Pisces. It used to be that amethyst is associated with alcoholism and other addiction. Ancient times believed that wearing an amethyst will prevent the spirits of the alcohol to enter one's body.
However, it has become more popular because it is also more affordable but nonetheless beautiful if properly cut and shined. The new mine in Brazil and Russia contributed to the availability of the stone.
Not much maintenance is required. You can wear it anywhere and it will never fade. If you want to clean it, all you have to do is wash it with clean water and soap and it will look good as new.
